NPA participates in standardization work for packaging
As additional requirements and regulations for packaging and producers are introduced within the framework of the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation within the EU (PPWR), it is important for NPA to be involved in the development of upcoming standards for recycling packaging.
– The standards for design for recycling that are now being developed at the European level will most likely be linked to future legal requirements. Since they will significantly impact us and our affiliated producers, we want to have the opportunity to both influence and gain insight into this work, says Einar Ahlström, materials specialist at NPA.
NPA has therefore applied and been accepted as a participant in the committee ”SIS/TK 165 Packaging”. This committee also includes the materials and packaging industry, producers, interest organizations, and research institutes.
SIS (Swedish Institute for Standards) represents Sweden in CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation). CEN is a European standardization organization that brings together national standardization organizations at the European level. Through participation in SIS, NPA contributes as Swedish national experts in the work of developing standards and technical specifications for design for recycling packaging within CEN.
– My hope is that through our participation, we can influence the standardization work so that upcoming standards are relevant and contribute to effective legislation. It needs to set clear and fair requirements that make a difference and help reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Thanks to our participation in the committee, we are well-prepared to prepare both ourselves and our customers for the upcoming requirements,” says Einar Ahlström.
Facts about SIS/TK 165 Packaging
SIS’s technical committee works to promote Swedish interests in European and global standardization through national knowledge transfer, collaboration, and information sharing between Swedish stakeholders.
The standards cover packaging of all types and materials and aim to enable national and international manufacturers, suppliers, and authorities to agree on common requirements for:
- Manufacturing of packaging, by setting requirements for substances and materials, and
- Handling of used packaging, by minimizing the negative environmental impact of packaging.

As the largest producer responsibility organization, NPA has a responsibility to provide so-called collection points throughout Sweden. Here, companies can drop off packaging waste generated in their operations free of charge. The collection points are financed through the packaging fees for non-private use paid by producers.
